Moodyz
Moodyz (ムーディーズ Mūdīzu), also known as Mr. President, is one of the largest adult film producers in Japan. Moodyz’s website, www.moodyz.com, was launched in March 2000 and the company released its first videos in September 2000 starting with Costume Princess featuring Maiko Yuki. One of the studio’s earliest stars was adult film idol Bunko Kanazawa who appeared in the Costume Princess series in December 2000.
Crystal-Eizou
Crystal-Eizou was founded in October 1984 and was incorporated in June 1985 at a time when home video recorders were beginning to significantly penetrate the Japanese market and actresses were being elevated into AV Idols. A number of significant figures in Japanese adult video (AV) history have been associated with the Crystal-Eizou company during its long history. Among these was the innovative and controversial director Toru Muranishi (村西 とおる) who later left to start his own company Diamond Visual. Muranishi launched the career of Kaoru Kuroki who debuted at Crystal-Eizou in October 1986 and went on to become Japan’s “first high-profile AV actress”. Kuroki left Crystal-Eizou to join Muranishi at his new company but a few years later the company found another main draw in Ai Iijima who debuted with them in 1992 and soon became acknowledged as the top AV actress of her time. Another early AV Idol who performed for Crystal-Eizou was Yumika Hayashi who appeared as early as 1989 in the video Gansha 6 renpatsu! gaburi hime Hayashi Yumika. The company inaugurated a major new label, Venus, in June 1997.
By December 2007, the company had 23 employees and a capital of 200 million yen (about $2 million) with an annual revenue of 2.6 billion yen (about $26 million). The company President is Tadaharu Nishimura (西村忠治) and the corporation headquarters are in Tokyo’s Toshima ward. Crystal-Eizou operates its own website, Crystal-Online, where DVDs are sold and streaming videos are available through membership. Their video products are also available in a large network of dealers throughout Japan. The website also contains an archive of Crystal-Eizou actress interviews dating back to 2001. The company specializes in single actress featured videos and “big-bust” genre productions.
Glory Quest
The Glory Quest studio has produced adult videos since at least June 10, 2000, when it released Sweet Doll 01 (スイートドールスペシャル 01) on VHS (SDS-01). In December 2019, DMM, the largest adult video retailer in Japan,[citation needed] listed 3532 videos available for purchase under the Glory Quest studio, and 2110 videos under the GLORY QUEST label. The company releases its videos twice a month, at a rate of about 18–20 videos per month. On their website, www.gloryquest.tv, members can download videos and order Glory Quest DVDs. They also sell its products in stores throughout Japan.
Glory Quest produces adult videos in various adult genres, including popular actresses in “big bust” (巨乳) videos. It has also made more extreme fetish videos under its Maniac label, including such genres as fisting, S&M, scat and, at one time, bestiality. Its Maniac Shemale, Transgender and Ultra Sex labels feature videos with transsexual actresses.
Another notable genre for Glory Quest has been “elder porn”, a fast-growing niche in Japanese pornography. As Glory Quest public relations representative Kayoko Iimura has said: “If we only make standard fare, we cannot beat other studios … so we wanted to make something new. A relationship between wife and an old father-in-law has enough twist to create an atmosphere of mystery and captivate viewers’s hearts.” Glory Quest’s elder star is Shigeo Tokuda, born in 1934, who has “proved to be a goldmine for Glory Quest” with two “old man” series: Maniac Training of Lolitas (December 2004) and Forbidden Elderly Care (Forbidden Nursing) (August 2006). A third series, Big Tits Loving Grandfather Erotic Mischief, began in April 2008.
Glory Quest, incorporated as GQE Inc. (有限会社GQE), had capital of 3 million yen (about $30,000) in 2010. Its CEO is Ken Miyasaka (宮坂謙). It remains an independent company, and is not part of a conglomerate. Like other Japanese AV companies, it belongs to one of the voluntary “ethics groups” which regulate content and censorship: the Content Soft Association (CSA) (Japanese: コンテンツ・ソフト協同組合 [Software Content Association]), a creation of the Soft On Demand group of companies.
TMA
TMA, founded in October 1990, has offices located within Tokyo’s Toshima ward. The studio specializes in videos generally in the cosplay genre but they are especially noted for making porn-parodies based on famous manga and anime series such as The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and K-On!.
TMA has been one of the pioneer companies in exploring new media for adult videos. In 2005, they were one of the first studios, along with Glay’z and h.m.p.,[5] to produce adult material for the UMD format used on the PlayStation Portable with their August 12, 2005 release of three videos including Campaign Girl Collection Portable (キャンギャルCollection ポータブル), coded TPS-001. Two years later in 2007, when Sony’s Blu-ray format was still in competition with the rival HD DVD format, with some technical assistance from Sony, TMA was one of the first Japanese AV companies to release videos in the Blu-ray format. In a July 2007 article, Yoshimasa Nozu, a producer at TMA said the company planned to release at least one Blu-ray disc per month for the rest of the year.
The studio produces about 16 new videos per month and in September 2011, the Hokuto Corporation’s commercial website DMM listed over 1250 DVD titles available under the TMA company name.
TMA was one of the companies which submitted videos for the 2008 AV Grand Prix competition. Their entry, Hermaphrodite White Lily Academy (ふたなり白百合女学院 ほしのみゆ), labeled AVGP-020, was a futanari genre work starring Miyu Hoshino, Ryo Kiyohara, Reina Mizuki and Nana Mizuki. TMA also entered the 2009 AV Grand Prix contest with a video, Miniskirt Creampie International Students (ミニスカブーツ生中出しインターナショナル), labeled AVGP-131, which featured non-Japanese actresses.
Waap Entertainment
Waap Entertainment was founded in 1998 and released its first videos in December of that year. The company specializes in single actress videos and is best known for its Dream Shower (ドリームシャワー, Doriimu Shawaa) series which premiered on December 17, 1998 with Dream Shower No.1 starring Izumi Maki and directed by Alala Kurosawa. The series is part bukkake and part gangbang and has appeared in more than sixty installments on the company’s Beauty label. The studio is also recognized for having developed several prominent modern AV directors including Alala Kurosawa, [Jo]Style, K*WEST and KINGDOM.
When S1 No. 1 Style introduced the new less concealing digital mosaic style of censorship in late 2004, Waap followed soon afterward with their own Digital Mosaic (デジエロモザイク, Dejieromozaiku) videos. Waap Entertainment produces about 10 new videos per month and the Hokuto Corporation’s AV retailer DMM listed more than 1500 DVD titles available under the Waap Entertainment name as of September 2011.
The company’s reputation has extended to the Village Voice where columnist Johnny Maldoro named Waap’s video Semen Club 2 (ザーメンクラブ2) starring Yui Kayama as the Bukkake Best of 2003. Waap has also expanded into another area of entertainment with game, puzzle and photo collection apps for the iPhone featuring some of the studio’s top models.
Wanz Factory
The company was founded in March 2000 and presently employs 20 people. Their adult videos are sold in more than 3,000 stores in Japan. Japanese adult video studios are usually divided into mainstream and independent types, the mainstream or “pro” studios such as Kuki, Alice Japan and h.m.p often being larger and older than the “indie” companies such as Soft On Demand, Cross, Dogma and Moodyz while the latter usually have less censorship and are more adventurous in their offerings. Wanz Factory is one of the indie companies with a specialty in AV Idol videos and large-busted “big boobs” models. The studio releases about 16-17 videos per month including some 10 new original works. The major Japanese video distributor DMM, a division of the Hokuto Corporation, listed more than 2000 DVD titles for Wanz Factory in September 2011.
