New York State has the highest rate of suicide among residents in the United States, according to the New York City Health Department.
New York is the only state in the nation to have the same rate as Alaska, where residents have a rate of about 4.3 per 100,000 residents, according the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
New Yorkers have the second highest rate in the country, according a report released Monday by the New England Journal of Medicine.
More than 16,000 people died by suicide in New York in 2016, including nearly 12,000 from drug overdose, according data compiled by the Journal.
The suicide rate has risen dramatically in the last few years.
The total number of deaths in the state climbed from 1,081 in 2016 to 3,631 in 2017.
It’s now higher than the total death toll in any other state, including the United Kingdom.
